Eid-el-Filtr: Govt orders reopening of all markets in State

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has ordered that all important and community markets throughout the State be reopened on Saturday, May 23.

The Governor made the revelation in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olusegun Ajiboye made available to newsmen in Akure on Friday.

Recall that Akeredolu had initially sealed daily market activities in the State as part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The decision is to enable Muslim faithful in the State engage in shopping activities ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr festivities.

“Meanwhile, it must be noted that the earlier order restricting business and market activities to Tuesdays and Thursdays in the State resume immediately after tomorrow,” the statement added.

Nigerian Hauwa Ojeifo wins Bill Gates 2020 Change Maker Award

Nigerian gender and disabilities rights activist, Hauwa Ojeifo has won the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Change Maker award for the year 2020.

The foundation made the announcement during the Gates Foundation Global Goalkeeper Award won by director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Dr. John Nkengasong.

The 2020 Changemaker Award celebrates an individual, who has inspired change using personal experience or from a position of leadership.

It recognised Ojeifo for her work promoting gender equality (Global Goal #5).

Ojeifo is a sexual and domestic abuse survivor and founder of She Writes Woman, a women-led movement giving the issue of mental health a voice in Nigeria.

As part of its annual goal keepers campaign, the foundation also announced three other goal keepers awards and launched two innovative partnerships that address the impact of COVID-19 on Kenya’s health and economy.

Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, praised Nkengasong and the Africa CDC for their commitment to the fight against COVID-19.

Gates said: “Dr. Nkengasong and his team at Africa CDC are deeply deserving of this award. Their commitment to securing the latest innovations from elsewhere in the world—as well as developing them themselves—will go a long way towards ensuring that the continent has the vaccines and medicines it needs to fight COVID-19.”

In addition to Dr. Nkengasong, and Ojeifo, two other winners also emerged. They are: Bonita Sharma of Nepal, and the MASH Project Foundation based in India.

“Each was recognised for playing a role in addressing the effects of COVID-19 in their communities.

“The 2020 Global Goalkeeper Award recognises an established individual demonstrating significant commitment to health and development, specifically in response to the pandemic. The award was presented to Dr. Nkengasong, a central voice for Africa’s scientific community.

As co-chair of the Africa CDC Consortium for COVID-19 Vaccine Clinical Trials (CONCVACT), Dr. Nkengasong is leading the securement of a variety of late-stage vaccine clinical trials on the continent by bringing together global vaccine developers, funders, and local facilitators.

The 2020 Progress Award, which celebrates an individual who supports progress via a science, technology, digital or business initiative, recognised Bonita Sharma of Nepal for her work promoting good health and well-being (Global Goal #3).

Sharma is the co-founder and CEO of Social Changemakers and Innovators (SOCHAI), a youth-led nonprofit working to improve the nutritional health of nursing mothers and young children and to economically empower marginalized women through business opportunities.

The 2020 Campaign Award, which celebrates a campaign that has raised awareness or built a community by inspiring action and creating change, recognised the MASH Project Foundation for furthering global cooperation and partnership (Global Goal #17).

A former Nigerian Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi, has been accused of stripping his hotels staff naked over alleged N5,000 theft.

The politician reportedly arrested the four workers named, Gloria Oguzie, Victor Ephraim, Rosslyn Okiemute and Achibong Precious, who worked in his Signatious Hotel, Warri, Delta State, after subjecting them to dehumanizing treatment.

Expressive Info learnt that Gbagi, who is reportedly nursing a 2023 governorship ambition in Delta State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, last week Friday arrested the workers after they were striped naked, photographed inside the hotel before being taken away by the police to Ebrumede Police Station where they were locked up.

Speaking with newsmen, a member of staff of the hotel revealed that his colleagues were arrested by the former minister over the alleged theft of the of 5,000 naira.

He said, “My boss, former Minister of State for Education and owner of Signatious Hotel, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, arrested four of my colleagues working for him over the stealing of N5,000 from the hotel when actually the N5,000 was given as a gift to them by a guest because of their good behaviour.”

“Before they were arrested by the police on Friday last week at the hotel, the four staff were stripped naked while they were photographed in the presence of the police.

“We learnt that the dehumanising treatment was instructed by our boss.”

It was further gathered that the hotel management forcefully made some withdrawals from the bank accounts of the four staff through their ATM cards before the police took them away in a waiting van.

The four staff were charged before a magistrate court sitting in Effurun after four days of detention.

In a five-count charge, the police accused the suspects of conniving among themselves to steal monies ranging from N156,000, N110,000, N5,000 and N2,000 owned by Signatious Hotel and committed an offence punishable under section 516 and 390 (9), of the criminal code Law Cap21C Vol.1 Law of Delta State.

The four staff, it was learnt, were granted bail on Monday through the intervention of some anti-corruption and human rights activists, who decided to take up the matter.

Warri-based human rights lawyer, Omemiroro Maxwell Ogedegbe, who confirmed the story, said that the staff worker were granted bail by a magistrate court sitting in Effurun, Delta State.

FG opens online portal today for Nigerians to access N75billion survival fund

An online portal for Nigerians to register for the N75billion survival fund for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), will be launched on Monday September 21 by the federal government.

Mariam Katagum, minister of state for industry, trade and investment said the programme is aimed at tackling the economic challenges faced by small businesses as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Project Delivery Office also said in a statement;

“Nigerians interested in the Payroll Support scheme are to note that the site for registration will be open from 10 pm Monday September 21, 2020.

“In order to ensure seamless registration process, the Project Delivery Office has designed a registration schedule.

“Registration for Payroll Support will start with educational institutions on Monday and will be followed with businesses in the hospitality industry on Friday September 25 beginning from 12 A.M.

“The portal will also be open to other category of small businesses from 12 A.M., on Monday September 28, 2020.”
